Learn the power of somatics to heal
This September The Embody Lab launches a first-of-its-kind 60-hr Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy Certificate to learn the healing power of somatic therapy with the world's leaders in trauma healing and recovery. In a recent interview Dr Scott Lyons answers some commonly asked questions about this program and what makes it unique.
How is this program different from a summit?
Scott says many people are asking how is this program different from a summit, given that there are so many incredible, amazing faculty. Scott explains that, unlike a summit where the teachers don't know what the other teachers are teaching, this program is an integrated, structured curriculum. All the faculty members are colleagues and are connecting together throughout this program to co-create the curriculum. Each individual module is in relationship to the whole and every faculty member is aware of what's coming before their session and what's coming after.
So that we're really building the curriculum through the entire program. Scott explains that what makes this program so incredibly unique and special is that these world-renowned facilitators who have their own programs are actually coming together to collaborate in this program. We believe that this is what makes the program special, so unique and truly outstanding.
I’m not a licensed practitioner. Can I still participate in this program?
Another question we’re frequently asked is “I’m not a licensed practitioner. Do I qualify to do this program?”
Scott’s answer to this is yes! He explains that wherever you are on your education journey, this program will work for you. We’ll spend a lot of time supporting you on how to explore the material and integrate it - wherever you are in the process. Whether you're working in behavioral or mental health, social justice work or community work, or in education or private practice, the tools you’ll learn from this program will be valuable.
"Wherever you are in your educational or professional journey, one of the things we can recognize is that trauma is pervasive. No matter what career choice we're in no matter whether we're a parent or a sibling or an uncle or whatever place we are in the world, trauma is present”. says Scott.
The tools offered in this certificate program will support you no matter where you are or what you do in support of other people. Scott explains that trauma therapy is not just about diving into the fire of the trauma. Most of the work, he says, is actually building the support systems, the resilience, the capacity, the resourcing, and the community building. So we're really looking at this full holistic spectrum of tools and support no matter where we are in our educational or professional journey.
Who is this program for?
Similar to the question above, Scott explains that one of the things we recognize is that this program is right for you. No matter where you are on your educational or professional journey trauma, there is no place trauma can hide. Trauma is pervasive and present in every profession and every aspect of our community, of our life, of our interaction with our children or with family members. And so no matter where we are in a professional or educational position or journey, we need support and tools to help ourselves and others through that process.
Scott goes on to say that when I talk about helping other people, it doesn't always mean going into the depth of the actual trauma and doing memory reprocessing. Trauma therapy is actually a much bigger, more holistic concept. It can be involved in social services, community work individually in groups, and it can be involved in how do we build support community connections, resilience, contact with oneself, and capacity building. So there's a lot of tools that we build that are not dependent on the actual medical or licensure that we have. This program really does work for both medical licensures, as well as coaches and parents and any other education or position we are in, in the world.
Is this program an overview or a deep-dive?
The best way to answer this question Scott explains is to imagine a Venn-Diagram. The various circles are the specific somatic modalities and tools. Each of those modalities and powerful tools sits on a solid foundation of somatic trauma therapy principles and key practices. These foundations are the overlapping parts of that Venn-Diagram, and through the program, you’ll move through a progression that is the solid foundation of somatic trauma training.
Once the foundational work is done, Scott explains that the course will start to get to add specific and powerful tools from a variety of modalities that build on each other. By the end of the program, you will have learned powerful tools that are built like blocks on top of each other. Throughout the course of the program, you will engage with a wide array of empowered and intelligent ways of working with individuals, groups, communities, collectives that have been inspired by a variety of modalities, but grounded and integrated as they are weaved together through this program.
