ABOUT THIS SUMMIT
Empower your healing journey and learn to access your internal body wisdom, release the binds of trauma, and build resilience for yourself and others.
Gather with us online for our “Somatic Trauma Healing Summit” with internationally recognized leaders in somatic-based approaches to trauma healing and recovery.
While traditional therapy focuses on verbal processing and cognitive meaning making, a somatic approach to healing trauma invites the individual into the wisdom of their body as the intuitive place of healing and well-being. Somatic Trauma Healing offers a paradigm shift, situating the individual as the expert of their own journey of healing, transformation, and wellbeing.
Our Somatic Trauma Healing Summit blends traditional wisdom and embodiment practices with contemporary neuroscience and psychology, supporting healing and transformation while working with every aspect of an individual— psychologically, psychically, spiritually, energetically, socially, and environmentally.
Dr. Peter Levine, creator of Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) says “Trauma is a fact of life. It does not have to be a life sentence.” In this Summit we will explore foundational tools of healing trauma from an embodied perspective to support the healing and transformation of trauma.
Based on the foundational principle that healing and integration happens through our bodies' primal language of movement, breath, and sensation, the Somatic Trauma Healing Summit will explore a variety of somatic-based approaches to heal, and restore well-being for yourself and others.

Nkem Ndefo
Resisting the Seduction of Trauma Porn
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Telling our trauma stories can set us free, but it can also arouse more trauma, creating cycles of trauma porn. In this session, we will explore how to distinguish when telling our story is healing and when it is damaging. We will ask and answer the vital question: What do we need to prepare ourselves for to share our trauma stories so we can heal and get free?
Nancy Napier
Working with Implicit States and Shock Trauma: Things I Have Learned Along the Way
A 75-MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
At this point in my career, I have specialized in work with dissociation/ parts and trauma resolution approaches for about 40 years. Two elements of my work have placed themselves in the foreground of my awareness these days: attending to both implicit states and shock trauma. They represent states of being that don’t take in new information and also access responses that are out of date. Our perspective from implicit states draws on past learnings, and the disorganization of the nervous system inherent in shock trauma keeps us from being able to truly settle and move beyond the shock moment. I’d like to share some of the approaches I have used to meet and resolve these two powerful dynamics that we encounter in many of our clients.
Francine Kelley
You, Me and the In-Between: Compassionate Boundaries and the “No Thank You.”
A 75-MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
You may have heard that boundaries are like cell membranes: able to keep bad stuff out and let the good stuff in. So then it should be simple, right? Get in touch with your “cell membrane” and voila! You’ll be handling confrontations like a pro. If only it were that easy. In this session, we will play together with boundaries. We will explore boundaries as gentle and compassionate presence - with ourselves and others. We will explore the in-between, the what came before, and the resting into.
Kathy L. Kain
Supporting Somatic Resilience
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Unreliable access to safety and belonging undermines wellbeing, which may compromise our ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Using a trauma-informed and somatically oriented framework, Kathy will present simple and practical information about three somatic systems that are impacted by lack of safety and belonging:
1. The amygdala – our brain’s survival referencing system
2. The neurochemistry of chronic threat exposure
3. Interoception – our body’s self-communication system.
For each of these three content areas, Kathy will guide participants through simple somatic
practices that can support change and deepen resilience. The practices are appropriate for
professionals and non-professionals alike.
Dr. Arielle Schwartz
Applied Polyvagal Theory in Yoga: Key Principles for Trauma Recovery
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Within this session, we explore the intersection of yoga, polyvagal theory, and trauma recovery. This is where science, soma, and soul meet. Perhaps at its core, applied polyvagal theory in yoga recognizes that any practice, whether movement, conscious breathing, or meditation, can reveal the state of your nervous system. Moreover, such awareness allows you to take better care of yourself. Following a lecture to describe the key principles of yoga for trauma recovery, we will engage in an experiential practice for embodied self-care.

Dr. Mariel Buqué
Intergenerational Trauma Assessment and Healing
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Generational trauma is known to be a wounding of the soul, meaning a wounding of the mind, body, and spirit. In this workshop, you will learn specific methods for addressing lineage pain at all three levels of wounding. This workshop will provide an overarching view of intergenerational trauma patterns, the ways healers can begin the process of assessing for traumas that carry long lineage histories, and facilitate holistic and somatic practices for addressing this type of pain. We will explore experiential practices to deepen your understanding of addressing generational trauma and facilitating healing for yourself and others.
Dr. Ruby Gibson
Global Warming Woman, Transforming Anger, Fire & Power
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Global Warming Woman is a totem for our changing world. She is a fierce and protective warrior, deeply connected to Earth Mother, seeking balance on the Wheel of Life. Right now she is on fire, kindling the injustices of the past, demanding respect for her body, and blazing a passionate path for the future with her instinctual, creative force. She owns the right to be angry, and has the willingness to be accountable to her actions. When well directed and properly expressed, anger can be transformed into power, helping to demonstrate self-protection, voice, choice and leadership. These are activities of profound responsibility requiring us to proceed with consciousness and ethical reflection.
Joshua Sylvae
The Restoration of Polarities: Considerations for Healing & Transformation
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
In this presentation, we will be considering polarity as an organizing principle for life and for healing. Trauma and distress disrupt the oscillatory processes of the human psyche and organism, though the field of traumatology has been slow to recognize this. Each heartbeat and every breath repeatedly cue us to the need for movement between polarities for healthy psychophysiological functioning, as Peter Levine described in his notion of pendulation: rhythmic cycling between expansion and contraction. Nature is in a constant state of flux, though modern people tend to perceive their bodies as machines and their minds as computers. This misses the fundamental truth that stasis is death, and being mired in a domesticated mindset that seeks to dominate and control natural processes results in disease.
We will celebrate how attention is designed to flow along continua, and the way pulsation is the paradigm for health in our tissues. Understanding the foundation of our trauma healing work as the restoration of polarities both simplifies and clarifies, equipping us with an intuitive sense of the terrain to be traversed in the journey of healing and transformation. At the pinnacle of this journey is the goal: behavioral flexibility. We can each transcend the need for overly determined, conditioned responses to phenomena, opening up the possibility for spontaneity and a fuller engagement with life. Descriptions of clinical scenarios and how this approach informs trauma healing will be discussed, and the therapeutic impact of balancing psychic and somatic polarities will be experientially explored.
Dr. Aimie Apigian
Why Starting With Somatic Work Is Essential In A Holistic Integrative Trauma Model
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
With all the therapy modalities out there, how does a holistic professional know where to start? Somatic work is a powerful modality and from the data that will be presented, is the place to start for addressing stored trauma in the body.
Steve Haines
Bridges Between Pain and Trauma: How Embodiment and Safety Can Turn Down Pain
A 75 MINUTE EXPERIENTIAL SESSION
Modern pain science frames pain as a protective feeling that emerges when the brain perceives danger. Pain is complex, social, contextual and always emotional.
Modern models of trauma really add to our knowledge of how we respond to overwhelming threat. By including a deep understanding of dissociation and the feelings of disembodiment that we often work with in trauma, it is possible to really improve how we work with presentations of persistent pain.
