ABOUT THE EVENT

Complex trauma occurs as a result of repeated or chronic exposure to extremely threatening events from which escape is impossible. Growing up afraid has ramifications for cognitive, emotional and physical development that persist into adulthood until one has sufficient support to heal. Furthermore, living in chronically unsafe environments can lead to a felt sense of powerlessness and hopelessness. These symptoms are not character weaknesses; they are a learned stress response.

Individuals with Complex PTSD and early childhood developmental trauma are at greater risk for dissociation or emotional flooding; both of which can lead to re-traumatization if not addressed successfully in treatment. In this engaging and practical training, we consider how we help others and/or ourselves recover from the costs of complex PTSD by deepening compassion and reducing shame.

Addressing the verbal or narrative component of memories may allow the story to change but will not address disturbing sensations that dominate and interfere with clients’ lives. However, somatic psychology recognizes the value of working with the felt sense of the body to access implicit memories by helping clients sense the affective components of body posture, gestures, breathing patterns, and movement impulses with interoceptive awareness.

Dr. Arielle Schwartz presents her Resilience Informed Approach to care which recognizes that every human has an intrinsic drive toward wholeness. You are invited to see traumatized individuals for the incredible strength they carry within them.
