Not knowing how to support a client with unpredictable, labile, and mutating pain and other somatic symptoms can leave practitioners at a loss. The following list includes symptoms that share the common root cause of core autonomic dysregulation. Suppose you have a client who presents with any of the following symptoms or diagnoses; this workshop will help you to understand the underlying mechanisms and suggest strategies for working with them:
various symptoms of chronic pain (neck, back, etc)
migraines, vertigo
rapid heart rate
low BP
heart arrhythmia
POTS (Tachycardia, dizziness, or fainting upon standing)
Fibromyalgia
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
asthma and certain auto-immune diseases
anxiety and mood disorders
Many medical professionals, physical therapists, and Psychotherapists attempt to chase after individual symptoms to little avail. In this workshop, we will learn how to identify the underlying stress conditions that often cause these perplexing symptoms. Once we know how to identify these stress/trauma conditions, we can more effectively treat them by utilizing special techniques to resolve the underlying autonomic dysregulation.
During this workshop, you will learn to identify the syndromes of core dysregulation, understand their underlying dynamics, and learn how to work with them using Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory as a guide.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Define autonomic dysregulation syndromes.
Identify the mapping of the polyvagal system on the various organ systems – both skeletal and visceral.
Understand the role of trauma-related bracing patterns in the perpetuation of chronic pain syndromes.
Identify the functional mind-body pathways mediated by the polyvagal circuits.
Support clients in understanding the functional nature of their symptoms through “psycho-education.”
